A Tranquil Retreat in Mallorca: Where Mediterranean Heritage Meets Modern Luxury

Nestled in the heart of Mallorca, within the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Serra de Tramuntana, lies a holiday home that masterfully blends traditional Balearic architecture with contemporary design. With its warm stone facade, terracotta roof tiles, and soft pink shuttered windows, this finca pays homage to the local vernacular style while embracing a more nuanced, modern aesthetic on the inside.

The transformation of this Mallorca finca was led by the London-based Bergman Design House, who thoughtfully preserved the home's structural integrity while infusing it with a new design language that celebrates both heritage and modernity.

The interiors are an evocative dialogue between nature and craftsmanship, inspired by the surrounding landscape. Sun-bleached neutrals, earthy terracottas, olive greens, and serene marine blues bring the beauty of the island indoors, creating a tranquil atmosphere that complements the home’s natural surroundings.

The use of tactile materials such as stone, linen, natural plaster, handcrafted tiles, and wood adds authenticity, while occasional splashes of vibrant pinks and emeralds in the bathrooms evoke the feeling of entering a jewel box.

The main feature of the bathrooms, with their striking pink marble walls, highlights the designers’ bold approach to color, turning each bathroom into a visual surprise. This playful yet refined use of vivid colored stones contrasts beautifully with the otherwise muted tones of the public areas. In the powder room, green marble is complemented by sleek sconces from Apparatus, offering a striking contrast that elevates the space.

Bergman Design House co-founders, Marie Soliman and Albin Berglund, set out to create a peaceful sanctuary, where spaces flow naturally from one to the next. Drawing inspiration from Mediterranean monastic architecture and Japanese wabi-sabi philosophy, the designers sought to find beauty in imperfection, embracing the natural rhythms of the environment.

Spanning approximately 4,000 square feet across two levels, the four-bedroom home opens into a central lounge that seamlessly connects to a panoramic terrace, effectively blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor living. Soliman explains that the renovation, which took over 14 months to complete, involved sourcing bespoke materials and collaborating with local artisans. "We wanted each room to sing with personality, yet still feel cohesive and grounded," she adds.

In the dining area, a sculptural chandelier by Wired Designs takes center stage, adding an element of drama to the space. The large dining table, surrounded by 12 chairs from the Black Berg Collection, provides ample seating for guests, while the understated yet elegant design invites moments of shared connection.

The living room continues this serene theme, with several pieces from the Black Berg Collection, including an L-shaped sofa covered in Perennials fabric, a marble coffee table, and an array of carefully chosen fabrics and rugs. The space is designed to invite relaxation, with soft lighting from Porta Romana sconces, a Soho Home table lamp, and an eye-catching Wired Designs chandelier.

The kitchen features a striking marble island illuminated by a pendant light from Tyson London, with stools upholstered in Whistler Leather from the Black Berg Collection. The design here, as throughout the home, emphasizes the beauty of natural materials and a refined simplicity that invites connection with the environment.

In the bedrooms, the palette remains soft and welcoming, with occasional pops of color to create a warm, peaceful atmosphere. The main suite features a bathtub positioned to take in the breathtaking Mediterranean views, allowing the space to merge seamlessly with the surrounding landscape. The bed’s soft pink headboard complements the view, providing a serene focal point.

This finca is not simply a home; it’s a meditation on slow living. Every element, from the curvature of the chair legs to the texture of the fabrics, was carefully chosen to evoke a sense of peace and presence.

The designers’ commitment to creating a sanctuary of understated luxury is evident in the way each detail is thoughtfully considered. The result is a home where simplicity meets elegance in the most soulful way, inviting those who step inside to slow down, reconnect, and fully experience the beauty of life in this stunning corner of Mallorca.

The transformation of this finca into a modern sanctuary reflects the ability of design to bridge the gap between the past and the present, infusing traditional architecture with a contemporary sensibility. Each room, each corner, each piece of furniture tells a story of craftsmanship, nature, and the art of living slowly.
